Alkan Society Bulletins

This page provides access to the Society's Bulletins. We will be adding the Bulletins gradually over the next few months. Please read the note below on Adobe Reader if you are not familiar with this programme.

Click on the Bulletin you wish to download. Please note that bulletins marked by an asterisk (*) have had to be scanned as images, creating a larger file-size, and will therefore take longer to download. Anyone who is really interested in the way these Bulletins have been prepared for the net can read here.

 Adobe Reader

The Bulletins are provided, for technical reasons, in Adobe Acrobat format. If you do not have the Acrobat Reader programme you can dowload a free version by clicking on the Adobe logo below. Make sure you choose 'Acrobat Reader'. The programme is absolutely free and does not entail any obligations on you. You will also find it useful for other downloads on the Internet - it is a standard tool. When you have the programme on your computer it will automatically open to read any Acrobat documents.

You can print out the bulletins from the Adobe Acrobat Reader programme - the quality will be better than appears on your screen!

Preparing the Alkan Society Bulletins for the Internet

Bulletins previous to no. 60 are not available in their original electronic formats (where these existed). Those that are printed relatively legibly are scanned into an OCR programme which reconsitutes the text in Microsoft Word format. This is checked for misreadings, foreign accents, etc. and then converted into Adobe Acrobat format. As a consequence the text should be as in the original (I have made no changes even where there are some errors), but the pagination is likely to be different.

Some issues were however printed by reproduction of a typed original and the characters are not susceptible to OCR reading without very substantial checking and rewriting, rendering the above treatment inappropriate. These issues are therefore reproduced by scanning them as images, and then converting them to Acrobat. Pagination and layout are therore identical with the originals. However the size of the Acrobat file is many times the size of one created via Word. Typically they are of the order of between 0.5 -1.5 MB, and will therefore take much greater time to download. If you do not have broadband this may be very irritating, and I apologize. But I hope that slow access can be regarded as better than none.
